Coe Operations

The partial relaunch of Coe Operations is the direct result of a long retired computing consultant and lecturer being asked by their granddaughter for a World Flags app on her phone. Now that it works as intended, it is offered free of charge to a wider audience. It shall shortly be released on Google Play Store after testing on more devices. In the meantime its beta release and associated offshoots are available on their respective web pages, as are the online versions that can also be played in most browsers by clicking their icons below.

Please appreciate that being beta versions they are subject to change. If you have difficulty playing the online versions you may have to delete your browsing data to get the updated versions rather than cached ones. You will find this in your web browser's Settings. If you don't see a Personal browsing data section it will be in a Privacy related one.

I am not sure where this is headed but, health and motivation permitting, there is more educational software to come. I have started collating and editing resources for the human body, the skeleton at least, and already have further projects in the pipeline. Any progress in that regard shall be posted on the News page.

Whilst I do not guarantee responding to all emails, your feedback is most welcome, as is reporting any errors or broken hyperlinks.

The updates to Coe Operations World Flags and associated apps have improved the input and option lists. Window movement when list items scrolled into view with the virtual keyboard has been fixed allowing for autocompletion with much easier and faster input. Hyperlinks are also provided to every country and their respective capital city's Kiddle and Wikipedia pages. Gone are the nagging input error messages with only audible alerts remaining. Also added is single key press navigation in both display modes.

I have added the United Nations flag to the app as the counries I have included are almost without exception its members or recognised states. Also added is the European Union because... well, just because... like the UN, it is a supranational organisation founded on the co-operation of its members.

Background

European Countries

World Flags is the natural progression from a spreadsheet of European flags created years ago for my granddaughter and her primary school, comprising hyperlinks to maps and Kiddle by her father. When asked for an opinion, I immediately copied it to a simple web page as shown above.

I don't know how much it spurred her interest in flags and geography, but she can now identify most in an instant and asked for a flags test with maps on her phone while I was coding something else for personal use.

It started out as a simple web page with a bit of javascript to enable a test that needed no installation. However standard HTML options or datalist elements were totally unsatisfactory once used on a phone with the virtual keyboard. When coding the improvement, I was asked for abbreviations and later overheard frustration at a wrong answer due to a typo. Having said that I could not cater for such mistakes I realised that, since I was already coding the input, indeed I could.

The following US States and GB Counties apps are exactly the same as their World Flags counterpart apart from their respective data and resource files. Downloading and installation is the same, as is playing online by clicking their respective icons.
